Food insecurity can increase during the summer, with kids out of school and not getting the meals they rely on during the school year, which can place a strain on families. The Wilkinson Center is a nonprofit hosting a summer stock up campaign to help fight food insecurity in Dallas-Fort Worth.
During the school year, 1 in 5 children with food insecurity may qualify for a free lunch or breakfast, often making it their most reliable source of food from late August to early May. For some, summer break is a loss of that sense of safety, and reliable food.
The Wilkinson Center, a food pantry in East Dallas, lost power for three days and important food that would have gone to feed needy families. The power outages were caused by recent North Texas storms.
Wilkinson Center Executive Director Daley Ryan just revealed there are three new members on the Wilkinson board. The new trio includes Kathryn (Katie) Brennan, Kent Cummings and Susan Johnson.
